The Statue Of Liberty is a very important symbol of our freedom. The Statue Of Liberty means to our country freedom, democracy, and international friendship. This landmark was given to us by France because, we made a good friendship during the American Revolution. The French planned this statue at a gathering in 1865 at Edouard Rene de Laboulaye’s house. This is how the statue got started. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was the sculptor of the statue. He was the person who tried to get money in all different ways to build the statue. This took him a long time. In America they also had problems getting money for the pedestal they had to build for the Liberty Enlightening the World. They tried all different things until Bartholdi came and put two newspaper articles in the newspaper. The Statue was so big it had to be put in 210 big crates to fit on the boat. Once the boat arrived to the United States it had to be put together. When the statue was put together, on October 28, 1886, 20,000 people marched in a huge parade. The city of Brooklyn had shut down its schools to let the kids go with their family to the harbor on to a ship to go near Bedloe’s Island where the statue is located. At this island the people heard speeches and the face of the statue was revealed after being covered with the French flag. For a while immigrants came to that island before their ship landed at the harbor in New York City to represent the freedom of the United States Of America. They no longer do this today. This is a very interesting landmark that I think you should go visit. |
